There are many reasons why a man might consider testosterone replacement therapy and many potential benefits and risks of testosterone therapy that must be considered when researching this treatment option and discussing it with a medical professional. The team at Med Smart is ready to have this conversation with you as soon as possible and will be happy to work with you in order to get your libido back, your energy levels up, and more. There are many times where someone may believe that they would benefit from testosterone replacement therapy, however, only to find that there are other issues that aren’t due to low testosterone that must be addressed. We will be able to go through a battery of tests with you to determine whether or not testosterone treatment is the right option for you, as well as to discuss the benefits of testosterone therapy.

Potential benefits of the use of testosterone replacement therapy are numerous, but only if we have determined that the symptoms you are suffering from are the result of a testosterone deficiency and not other possible issues. Our team specializes in men’s health, and we look forward to discussing your options and how we can help you get your life back on track after suffering from the impacts of low testosterone. There are risks of testosterone replacement that we will also need to discuss if we determine that your testosterone levels are low, such as an increased risk of prostate cancer, which we will discuss during our intake and consultation where we can provide you with advice, diagnosis, or treatment plans that may work for you.

Read more below to learn about how testosterone replacement therapy for men may be a good fit for you, and contact Med Smart as soon as possible so that you can connect with an experienced and licensed medical professional about your situation and your needs. This type of treatment can change your life if you are a candidate for it, and we will be happy to walk you through the initial conversation about testosterone replacement therapy and help you get your life back on track.

What Are the Symptoms of Low Testosterone?

Before you start to consider whether or not testosterone therapy is right for you, it is first important to understand what the symptoms are that you should be looking out for. There is a range of symptoms that can indicate a testosterone deficiency, and no two cases are alike meaning that your symptoms may include only one or a few of the following. During our intake, we will be able to discuss these symptoms in detail with you in order to get a better sense of your situation and provide you with advice, diagnosis, or treatment depending on what we determine. Whether or not the following list seems entirely representative of your experience, contact us as soon as possible so we can help you make sense of the benefits of testosterone treatment and if low testosterone levels are the cause of the symptoms you are experiencing.

Low Sexual Desire

If you are experiencing a decreased sex drive, or libido, there are a number of issues that could be causing this problem. However, when combined with a number of other symptoms listed below, this could be an indication of low testosterone.

Erectile Dysfunction

Along with a decreased libido, erectile dysfunction can be a very significant and impactful symptom of low testosterone levels and may be an indication that testosterone replacement therapy is right for you.

Decreased Muscle Mass and Strength

If you are experiencing an inexplicable loss of muscle mass and/or strength, this could be the result of male hypogonadism that could be corrected with testosterone replacement therapy. This can be especially difficult when another symptom is chronic fatigue.

Increased Body Fat

Along with decreased muscle mass, men with low testosterone may also experience an increase in body fat that can also lead to things like chronic fatigue, self-consciousness, and depression, along with a decrease in strength and a number of other adverse effects.

Fatigue and Low Energy Levels

Chronic fatigue can be a significant symptom for men with low testosterone and can have a major impact on your life as you try to push through each day while suffering this pervasive effect on your own.

Depression

Depression can be a symptom of low testosterone levels, and can equally be the result of experiencing the rest of the symptoms that we have listed. Regardless, your suffering of all kinds can be reduced through testosterone therapy so that you can take your life back and get back to enjoying it the way you did before.

Irritability

It is no surprise that you would be irritable after suffering the aforementioned symptoms, but it may also be a direct symptom of your low testosterone levels, as well. Once we begin our testosterone therapy we will be able to target the symptoms and provide you with testosterone treatment intended to address each of them.

Body and Facial Hair Loss

Male hypogonadism can lead to a loss of body and facial hair, as well, as your testosterone level drops. Testosterone therapy can help to reverse your hair loss in many instances, and we will develop a specific course to help with this symptom.

Difficulty Concentrating

It may be no surprise to hear that men with low testosterone levels also suffer from difficulty concentrating in addition to the symptoms that we have already mentioned. Once we being our testosterone therapy, you may find that this symptom alleviates itself fairly quickly.

What Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Testosterone replacement therapy, also sometimes referred to as androgen replacement therapy, is a treatment for men suffering the effects of low testosterone. There are a number of ways that we can administer your testosterone therapy, each of which will depend on your personal preferences, your risk of heart attack, prostate cancer, and other specific risks based on your medical and family histories, and more. It is important that we develop a specific course for you during our intake sessions, because some types of testosterone therapy may increase the risk of certain problems.

Testosterone Gel

AndroGel is one of a number of popular gel options that can be applied directly to the skin when applied once a day. Most testosterone gel doses come in single packets so that you do not need to worry about dosages, but there may be other options that come in a pump that could work better for your needs.

Testosterone Patches

These patches are typically applied daily and deliver a measured dose of testosterone into your bloodstream over the course of the day. This slow-release works better for some men, and we will work with you to determine whether or not a patch is an appropriate option for your situation.

Testosterone Injections

If you would prefer to take a treatment course that requires less attention than a daily gel application or an oral tablet, there are injection options that include inserting slow-release tablets under the skin or an injection into the muscles. Depending on your needs and wants, we will discuss this option for your testosterone therapy.

Testosterone Pills

There are options for testosterone pills, but they have fallen out of favor in recent years due to the fact that they may cause damage to the liver that can be avoided by the other options available. If, however, it seems like an oral pill is the best testosterone therapy solution for your unique situation, then we will work with you to mitigate the risks while providing you with successful treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Testosterone Therapy?

If we determine that you are, in fact, suffering from the effects of low testosterone, the benefits that you will experience once we have gotten your treatment underway can be immense and life-changing. Men suffering from low T will experience slow changes to their body as their testosterone levels drop, and fortunately the benefits, in most cases, will take hold a lot faster. Some of the biggest benefits of testosterone replacement therapy are as follows:

Improved Energy Levels

If one of the symptoms that you have experienced due to low testosterone is chronic fatigue and low energy, one of the improvements that you can expect will likely be related to your energy. However, the improvements in all areas of symptoms are highly specific, and if you find that you are still suffering from low energy levels weeks or months after starting your treatment, we may need to take a closer look at what could be causing this issue.

Increased Sex Drive

Low libido is a major symptom of low testosterone, and one of the improvements that you can expect as your treatment begins to take hold.

Ability to Achieve and Maintain Erections

Along with an increased sex drive, many testosterone replacement therapy patients report a significant improvement in the quality of their erections, including their ability to achieve and maintain them during intercourse.

Increased Bone Density

Increased bone density is an important benefit of many testosterone replacement therapy courses, and can improve your safety and help to avoid broken bones from things that may have otherwise been minor issues.

Increased Muscle Mass and Strength

One of the major symptoms reported by people suffering from low testosterone is a loss of both muscle mass and strength, but as the therapy begins to take effect, you may experience regeneration of lost muscles (or an easier time improving and maintaining them), as well as an overall feeling of increased strength.

Mood Improvements

Many men report depression and irritability as a symptom of their low testosterone, and in many cases, the therapy may help to improve these conditions. However, like all benefits this is highly specific, so you may or may not feel improvements to your own mood.

Additional Benefits

The benefits that you will experience as a testosterone replacement therapy patient will be unique to your own situation, so you may or may not enjoy each of the benefits above, and may likely experience a number of other benefits that are not mentioned here. At the end of the day, the important thing to remember is that whether or not you report significant benefits, this therapy is important for your health if you suffer from low testosterone.

What Are the Risks of Testosterone Therapy?

The specific risks of testosterone therapy will vary depending on your unique family health history and your own physical condition, but there are a number of known risks that you may encounter including increased risk of heart disease, and in certain men, there is an increased risk of prostate cancer that will require a screening before we begin your treatment. These risks are why we do a battery of tests including checking your red blood cell counts (testosterone replacement therapy is not recommended for people with high red blood cell counts), and more. You will need to weigh the benefits and risks before moving forward.

Prostate Cancer Risks

Testosterone therapy is not known to cause prostate cancer, but has been known to increase the growth of existing prostate cancer — it is essential that you complete a cancer screening before beginning this treatment to ensure that this treatment does not lead to complications involving prostate cancer. We will go over the specifics of this risk with you during our intake and will be sure to take all precautions before initiating the process to work towards the best possible health outcomes.

Blood Clots

While going through your testosterone therapy, we will need to monitor a number of indicators to ensure that we can work to avoid blood clotting, deep vein thrombosis, or a pulmonary embolism that may be caused by the therapy. We will discuss these risks with you during our intake sessions. There are a number of indicators that we will look for before beginning your treatment that will help us understand whether or not we should be worried about an increased risk of blood clots, and these risks will play a significant factor in our plan.

Congestive Heart Failure

If you are at risk of heart disease or have a family history of heart disease, we will want to take a closer look at your heart health before we determine to move forward with your testosterone replacement therapy. Men with congestive heart failure issues should not go through with this therapy, as it can exasperate the problem and create more serious health issues throughout the treatment.

Additional Side Effects

In addition to the serious possible risks like prostate cancer, there are a number of lesser risks and side effects that can be expected with any type of medication, such as skin rashes, stomach irritability, digestive problems, and headaches. However, we will help you understand and learn how to manage these symptoms as we go. Each type of delivery system comes with its own set of side effects, but typically these side effects are less serious than the symptoms caused by low testosterone, an important male sex hormone that regulates many of your physical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Testosterone Replacement Therapy

The following are just a few of the many common questions that we answer during our intakes and throughout our work with our many patients. Remember that each answer provided below is meant to give you a general idea of how this could affect you, but is not meant to be taken as medical advice in any capacity. The best way to get specific answers about your situation and what you can expect as we begin treatment for your testosterone levels is by working directly with the team at Med Smart through the extensive work necessary to get moving in the right direction.

If you have suffered from the symptoms we have discussed on this page, you may be suffering from low testosterone levels that are having a widespread impact on your quality of life. However, there is no way to definitively diagnose you with low testosterone without working together directly through a series of tests, so the sooner you contact Med Smart, the sooner we will be able to have a clear understanding of your situation and start to develop a path forward with comprehensive treatment and testosterone therapy. The symptoms that are most common for low testosterone may also be indicative of a number of other health issues, so it is important that you get medical support regardless in order to make sense of what you are experiencing and get the help that you deserve.

If you are experiencing a number of the symptoms listed on this page, there is a good chance that you are suffering from low testosterone, but there is no way to be certain without getting comprehensive testing done first. When you are working with Med Smart, you can be confident that we will take every step to ensure that we have a comprehensive understanding of your testosterone levels, your other physiological issues that may play a role in your situation, and more, before developing a treatment plan specifically for you. Contact us as soon as possible so that we can help you make sense of your situation and get moving on the path towards recovery.

Testosterone replacement therapy is a lifelong treatment because your body has stopped naturally producing testosterone. However, we will not simply provide you with a treatment plan and let you go on by yourself indefinitely – as you age, as other conditions and issues may arise, and as your physical health shifts, we may need to adjust the dosage, delivery systems, and more. We will work closely with you to ensure that you are taking the appropriate levels of testosterone so that you have optimal results and maximum benefits while being able to comfortably take this hormone every day.

There is no set timeframe before you will be able to start seeing improvements, but according to a peer-reviewed paper published by the European Journal of Endocrinology titled “Onset of effects of testosterone treatment and time span until maximum effects are achieved,”

Effects on sexual interest appear after 3 weeks plateauing at 6 weeks, with no further increments expected beyond. Changes in erections/ejaculations may require up to 6 months. Effects on quality of life manifest within 3–4 weeks, but maximum benefits take longer. Effects on depressive mood become detectable after 3–6 weeks with a maximum after 18–30 weeks. Effects on erythropoiesis are evident at 3 months, peaking at 9–12 months. Prostate-specific antigen and volume rise, marginally, plateauing at 12 months; further increase should be related to aging rather than therapy. Effects on lipids appear after 4 weeks, maximal after 6–12 months. Insulin sensitivity may improve within a few days, but effects on glycemic control become evident only after 3–12 months. Changes in fat mass, lean body mass, and muscle strength occur within 12–16 weeks, stabilize at 6–12 months, but can marginally continue over years. Effects on inflammation occur within 3–12 weeks. Effects on bone are detectable already after 6 months while continuing at least for 3 years.

Of course, your results will vary depending on your specific body chemistry and physical factors, but we will work closely with you as you begin to experience the positive effects of your testosterone replacement therapy.

Under no circumstances should you ever buy pills provided by non-medical entities that claim to increase testosterone levels in your body. Your testosterone replacement therapy treatment is uniquely customized to your body and will be administered under the close guidance of a medical professional. If you take an over the counter pill that claims to do all of what medical testosterone therapy treatment can do, all without any intake, testing, or monitoring from a professional, you are likely putting yourself at risk of serious complications, or are being sold a placebo that will have no impact on you whatsoever. Regardless of the possible outcomes, you should never take medication or a pill that you can buy directly which claims to solve the problems of low testosterone.
